DSE’s Apex Awards finalists announced
February 2, 2011 by Dave Haynes
Digital Signage Expo has announced the finalists for its 2011 Apex Awards, which celebrate innovation in the development and deployment of technology in the global DOOH sector.
The nominees are the end users, so it is a little hard to sort out from the list who did what, and connect various dots.
The 30 finalists come out of a pool of 78 entries, and the Gold, Silver and Bronze Apex Awards will be presented in each category at an awards banquet Feb. 23 in Lost Wages, at the Paris Hotel.
And the nominees are …
Arts, Entertainment, Recreation
Israeli Pavilion in Expo 2010 China
The Museum of Brazil’s Sport Club Internacional
The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts
Business, Industry & Government
Amway Brand Center
The Nielsen Co.
Education & Healthcare
Texas State Technical College
West Texas A&M University
Amway Center Arena
Food & Beverage
JW Marriott Marquis Miami
Northern Quest Resort & Casino
WOW Dolphin Hotel
Bell Ice Cube
Destination Shuttle Services
Ad Airport Media & Clear Channel Interspace Airports
Tallink Silja Ferries
Digital City Media Group LLC
Intel End Cap Concept
Intel Virtual Footwear Concept
Some of these are familiar but a lot of them aren’t. The editorial staff at DSE does a great follow-up job – though it takes a while – profiling each winner and showing why. You can find the 2010 winner archive here: http://www.digitalsignageexpo.net/Resources/CaseStudies.aspx
One minor quibble with all this. The awards are “chosen by an independent panel of five industry journalists.” With absolute apologies and zero disrespect directed to whoever those people are (and I am obviously not one of them), are they really the best judges of excellence?
Highly, very highly doubtful. I’ve actually rolled out big networks, managed content teams, had metal banged and hanged, done all that stuff … and I don’t think I’d be an overly suitable judge.
It’s great that there are these awards and DSE, I’ll stress, does a nice job. But there are plenty of people now in this industry who are not just observers; theydirectly orchestrate and recommend great work. Certainly, there are some scruples-deficient types in this space who would hype a blue screen of death if it was put up by a client. But there are lots of good people who truly know their stuff, and would make completely fair assessments.
Might be time to start using truly qualified judges.
