Viewsonic Latest Commercial DisplayCo To Add “Smart” Display Series

December 13, 2016 by Dave Haynes

LA-based Viewsonic is the latest commercial display manufacturer to introduce a set of digital signage-centric panels that come with embedded Android media players.

The company’s new CDM Series comes in 43, 49 and 55-inch versions, and they are equipped with an A9 ARM quad core processor and 16GB eMMC storage, which can be expanded to 32GB with a micro-SD card. The displays have WiFi and LAN capabilities, and a built-in browser.

The specs don’t really say much about Android, but it definitely is. The screen shot in the downloadable manual suggests support for at least Android 4.4, which is my understanding of the OS version that’s fully ready for supporting the video and overall needs of signage applications.

The new units start shipping next month.

That means Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Philips and Viewsonic all have System on Chip displays now, and NEC kinda sorta has through its very different take, a panel with an embedded Raspberry Pi board.
