Leyard, Planar Light Up Giant 8K Indoor LED Wall At NAB

This is what Planar and its parent company Leyard are showing this week at the big NAB broadcast trade show in Las Vegas – about $2.3 million worth of 8K LED wall.

The video wall measures more than 31 feet wide by 18 feet tall (9.5 meters by 5.5 meters) and is composed of 64 Leyard TWA1.2 LED video wall displays with a 1.2 mm pixel pitch. That delivers 7680 x 4320 resolution, and at about 10 to 12 feet away, the individual LED lights all stitch together into one big, crisp visual.

The street price of each of those 64 LED blocks is about $36,000 USD, hence the $2.3 million.

 

Leyard and Planar are also showing a 4K video wall using a pixel pitch of just 0.9 mm. I’ve seen 0.85 mm from a Shenzhen company at ISE, but 0.9 is about as tight as pixel pitches are getting these days.

The whole resolution as a measurement of indoor LED walls thing is not something I yet have my head around. I just think in terms of pixel pitch, but as you can see, a 1.2 mm wall here is 8K and the tighter 0.9 mm is 4 K.

    In order to understand how large pixel pitch screen can be 8k when a tight pixel pitch screen is only 4k, it is important to understand how resolution works. For a screen to be HD, 4k, or 8k they MUST have the below listed pixel counts.

    HD = 1920 pixels x 1080 pixels
    4k = 3840 pixels x 2160 pixels
    8k = 7680 pixels x 4320 pixels

    Now, as long as a screen has 3840 pixels x 2160 pixels, then it is technically a 4k display. Same applies to the other screen types as well. The caveat here is that a larger pixel pitch screen is going to be pretty big in order to accommodate enough pixels to be technically 8k.

    Look at the above pictured Leyard/Planar display. Is it 8k? Yes. Is it also 30 ft wide to accommodate so many pixels? Yes as well. The math behind it would be:

    7680 X 1.2mm (the pixel pitch) = 9216mm = 30.23ft wide (checks out)

    Now if the 0.9mm Pixel Pitch display was also 8k, it would be a smaller size than its 30ft brother shown above.

    7680 x 0.9mm (pixel pitch) = 6912mm = 22.6ft wide (almost 8 feet smaller)

    Summary: Any display of any pixel pitch can technically be HD, 4k, or 8k. All that matters is that there is enough room for a display to be the necessary size.
