Why A Giant Bunny Is All Over Digital Signage Demo Screens

Ever wonder why you see this animated character on so many demos for digital signage displays and software”

Two words: Open Source.

The 10-minute animated short Big Buck Bunny is a 2007-8 production underwritten by a foundation that also has free, open animation software. This was a way to push the capabilities of the software.

The material, about an affable giant rabbit, gets used because it’s a free, no-strings-attached download and looks great, and also because it has been made available in a variety of formats, including 3D and high frame rate 60 frames per second video. That allows hardware companies to test and show how their gear works with very high quality motion media.

You still run into trade show booths where the operators are running movie trailers and hoping no one gets crank with them. The giant bunny takes that issue away.
