You’re right on the money. I would like to add a couple more things (even though this is about Twitter, you struck a nerve with LinkedIn.)

You’re right about LinkedIn, but I try to take it seriously. Sure, I use it to self promote, but I also use it to contact each of my connections on a regualar (monthly-ish) basis — following up on them. (No, I don’t have hundreds of connections. I don’t know hundreds of people. Frankly, I don’t know anyone who really does.)

Twitter: What is sad is that there are some organizations I have UF’d (please tell me I just coined an acronym!) because they put out too many posts. Some are interesting, but a dozen tweets a minute?

BTW – Showing you have perspective on the industry IS a form of self promotion. You don’t need to talk about yourself if you’re showing everyone that you are well in tune with the subject of your tweet.

I actually see Twitter becoming a better version of LinkedIn because Twitter does what LinkedIn doesn’t: Keep people linked in with what is going on. Watching people’s tweets tells me way more about them than their summary on LI.
