"We're number one!" Oh, really???

I like the guys at Neo Advertising, but a press release they issued today leaves me scratching my follicle-challenged head.

“We’re No. 1 in Canada and already, we’re among the leaders in Europe. With our technological expertise, our employees’ know-how and ourEuropean creative inspiration, we must now turn toward the future and offer our dynamic advertising screens to a larger market. The time has come to establish ourselves as the foremost operator of high-definition digital advertising signage networks, not only in Canada, but also in North America as a whole. People crave intelligent, interactive information, in real time,” pointed out Benjamin Mathieu, the CEO of Neo Advertising Canada – North America.

Number 1 in what???

Neo’s purchase of the badly floundering DAN Media food court TV thing gave them 60 locations and depending how you look at things, either 60 or 180 screens. There are several Canadian networks with a larger base of locations, including my alma mater Captivate, which has well more than 100 sites and 1,100 screens … not to mention a hell of a lot more revenue.

    Among the leaders in Europe? Wow – never heard of them.

    It seems to be de rigeur now to claim to be number one, or leading the field or whatever if you have anything to do with Digital Signage. I need to speak to Marketing asap, maybe I can get them to claim global leadership?

    Every real estate agent in every village in North America is number one, too. Just a matter of creating 10,000 categories.
