The University of Kent, in the south of England, is using digital signage at its redeveloped library to help students find and use services.

Thirty-five Samsung Smart Signage displays have been installed around the library by UK-based Eclipse Digital Media, using the cloud-based digital signage software, embed signage.

“Navigating around the large 15,000 sq. metre space for up to 9,000 visitors a day can be a challenge,” says Julia Crompton, Marketing Manager, Templeman Library, University of Kent, “so digital signage was employed to aid navigation across the four floors – helping students find a computer to use, books or space to study in. Some screens are also used for room availability and promoting events/services to library users.”

The screens are installed in a variety of configurations, including landscape kiosk enclosures, portrait totems, wall-mounted portrait enclosures and room booking housings outside study rooms.

“We can be innovative and flexible in the types of information shown,” adds Crompton, “including film and website feeds, scheduling screens with ease. Students have found the improved information helpful.”

The university is working with Eclipse Digital Media on plans to put another 30-plus screens in place this summer.

Nothing fancy here, and it doesn’t need to be. I like that the school and library have a very clear intent for these screens, and the messaging gets to the point.
