The massive CES trade show in Las Vegas is just weeks away, and ahead of it each year, the newly renamed Consumer Technology Association runs an innovation showcase for selected products.

There are dozens of honorees, for all kinds of tech and gadgets, and among them for 2016 is the Joan Meeting Room Assistant (or Joan), which is developed and marketed by the Slovenian firm Visionect, using E Ink display tech.

Joan was selected in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technologies product category. The distinction, says a press release, recognizes the value delivered by Joan’s system design and integration that significantly reduces the impact on the environment. Visionect’s expertise in product design paired with E Ink’s ultra-low power displays shows that eco-friendly products can still deliver leading edge functionality.

Joan is the visible part of a digital door label and meeting room scheduling solution that works with most traditional company scheduling applications, like Exchange. While most meeting room sign options out there use tablets, Joan uses E Ink’s low power electronic screen, Joan can last as long as three months on a single battery charge.

Visionect ran an interesting set of calculations and sent them along, suggesting how that by using an E Ink sign instead of something like a 7-inch tablet, vast amounts of electricity could be saved by a wholesale adoption of E Ink tech. Another interesting stat, for those wondering why companies are focused on the meeting room sign market – there are an estimated 55 million meeting rooms globally.

Office equipment is the fastest growing energy user in the business world, the release continues, consuming 15 percent of total electricity use in offices. This figure is expected to double by 2020, as reported by Carbon Trust. Meeting room door signs are no exception.

Products entered in this prestigious program are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, independent engineers and members of the trade media to honor outstanding consumer electronics products across 27 product categories. Products chosen as CES Innovation Award Honorees reflect innovative design and engineering in some of the most cutting edge tech products and services coming to market.

The Joan conference room system will be displayed at CES 2016, which runs January 6-9, 2016, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
